Joseph Knickerbocker – Running for President Elect
in Building Construction, Construction Management from Weber State University.
As a senior safety manager at Okland Construction, Red Cross instructor, and OSHA (500) Instructor, for
the past 12+ years; I have studied Human behavior, Systems Safety and am constantly reading books
and attending conferences to develop and sharpen my safety and leadership related acumen. My
current position at Okland is producer of monthly safety training videos.
I am currently a certified safety professional (CSP), construction risk insurance specialist (CRIS), And
construction health and safety technician (CHST).
I have served on the ASSP Utah Chapter Executive Committee for the past 5 years in varying position,
am currently serving as the Fundraising Chair.
Gene Marcum – Running for: Secretary – Utah Chapter
Currently hold OSHA 502, am an instructor for First Aid CPR/AED, Officer and Senior High Angle Ropes Rescue Technician in Search and Rescue for Tooele County. Hold FEMA certifications in Emergency Management
Rachel Michael – Running for: Treasurer – Utah Chapter
Professional (CHSP) and President Emeritus of the Board of Directors for the Board of Certification
in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE). She is also the past Administrator of the Ergonomics Practice
Specialty under the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP). Rachel ensures systems
leverage their human components for safe, productive, and efficient outcomes and has over 20
years of experience implementing successful ergonomics controls and programs in diverse
industries. An energetic and engaging trainer, she is a frequent speaker at industry events and is
currently the co-chair of the National Ergonomics Conference.

Roberto Gomez – Running for: Membership Chair – Utah Chapter

experience in occupational safety and health management in Industrial Construction and Oil
Field settings.
He has extensive education and has earned his professional designations as a Construction Risk
and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) issued by the International Risk Management Institute, Inc., and
a“Construction Health and Safety Technician” (CHST) and “Safety Management Specialist”
(SMS), through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), as well as “Construction Site
Safety Supervisor” (CSSS) through the National Center for Construction Education and Research
(NCCER), and he is a “Lead Auditor” through the ISO 9001:2000 – BSI Management Systems. He
is also an OSHA Authorized “Construction Outreach Trainer” through the University of Utah,
since 2008; a “Forklift & MEWP Instructor” through JLG, and a “First Aid CPR/AED Instructor”
through the American Red Cross.
Roberto is currently serving as a “Chair President” of the “Hispanic Safety Professionals of
Utah”, and as a “Membership Chair” officer for the American Society of Safety Professionals
(ASSP) – in the Utah Chapter, as well as a “Content Coordinator” for the Advisory Committee in
the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) – Hispanic Safety Professionals; he is also a
collaborator “Board Member” of the “Hispanic Worker Safety Alliance” in the Salt Lake City
Utah Area, and a collaborator “Board Member” for the Utah Suicide Prevention Coalition for
the
Construction Industry.
2023 Winter Clothing Drive
Thank you to all that contributed to the Annual Winter Clothing Drive. It was a huge success! This year we received even more donations than last year.
All donations were given to The Road Home shelter. “The Road Home provides emergency shelter, supportive services, and housing assistance that help individuals and families step out of homelessness.”
We would also like to thank the Utah Safety Council, Okland Construction, Hogan & Associates, Flyn Roofing, WCF, and Younique

2023 Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) Joseph Knickerbocker
Joseph’s leadership skills is an obvious area of strength. His natural ability
to lead coupled with his in-depth knowledge of safety in a construction and semiconductor environment has
proven excellent results with not only the building of great project safety cultures, but also in the coaching
and advancement of other safety professionals within our industry.
His high moral standards and ethics are evident in his actions and words when representing his profession
and when representing himself as a man. I consider Joseph a person of absolute integrity in his capacity as a
safety professional and in his personal responsibilities. These qualities reflect in the manner in which he
leads and in the end product of his assignments which he takes great pride in.
He demonstrates strong self-discipline and a willingness to assume personal responsibility for his role in
furthering the safety culture of Utah’s employers and employees.
Most recently Joseph worked with the editorial staff of ASSP’s Professional Safety Journal (PSJ) and submitted a peer-reviewed manuscript which was accepted and published in the 2023 May issue of the PSJ. Since then Joseph continues to work on additional articles for submission to the PSJ to further share his knowledge and experience with others in our profession.
2022 Winter Clothing Drive
This year we changed our “Annual Winter Coat Drive” to “Winter Clothing Drive”, with the goal of expanding on potential donations.
With the help of the Utah Safety Council, we had a great donation to give to The Road Home shelter.
Thanks to your generous donations many people will be a little bit warmer this winter season.
